Common Girl’s Names: Pronunciation

Below is a list of common girl’s name in England with an audio as well so you can hear the pronunciation of the name. It is important to learn common names in English for your IELTS listening test. IELTS frequently ask you to listen for personal information such as a name in section 1. You can also listen to boys’ names or watch a video to practice listening for names.

Mistake: Please notice that there is a mistake with the pronunciation of Scarlett in the audio. The audio actually says “Charlotte”. Sorry about that.

    Here you have mentioned Sarah with a ‘h’ but in the Listening exercise, you have mentioned Sara. How do we know which one is it?

  3. Is spelling Emilia wrong as you have mentioned it as Amilia, also is jackqueline is a wrong spelling?

    • The pronunciation of Emilia is correct. The first sound is a schwa. Look up schwa online and learn about it – it is an important sound in English.

    You are a great teacher !! Please tell difference between the name Scarlett and Charlotte . Both names have been pronounced same in the file. How to identify which spelling to be used.

    Here,I have confusion in writing the spelling of the two English names for Girls:Scarlett and Charlotte.Both names pronounce in the same way and how can we identify whether it is former or later.Will it be right if we write the either spelling?

    Charlotte and Scarlett sounded the same, how do we differentiate these?

    • Charlotte is pronounced with “Sh” at the start whereas Scarlet is pronounced with “Sk” at the start.
