Reading Practice Lesson for IELTS:

Passage: About Ants There are more than 10,000 known species of ants living throughout the world. Ants can be identified by the constriction that looks like a waist between the abdomen, at the end of the body, and the part of the body called the thorax , which is located before the head. Their bodies are covered with a hard armour called the exoskeleton. While the exoskeleton is their defensive weapon, their rear abdominal stinger is their offensive one. Like other insects, they have six legs; each with three joints. Ants have large heads with compound eyes, elbowed antennae, and powerful pincers known as mandibles. These are an ant’s most useful tools which are used for holding, carrying and cutting.

There are three types of adult ants living in the colony: the queen, female ants, and male ants. Queen ants are the largest ants in the colony. They have wings and their purpose is to lay eggs. The queens can live up to 30 years. Depending on the ant species and the nest community size, there may be one or more queens in the colony. The ant life cycle has four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The queen lays the eggs, which will hatch into larvae in a couple of days. The helpless larva are fed and groomed by the worker ants until they pass through the pupal stage. In a little more than a week, an adult ant will emerge and the metamorphosis is complete.

You can DOWNLOAD the reading passage here but the 8 questions must be viewed online: Reading Passage Ants. The answers are linked below.

Comments

  1. Hi Liz, I have a really silly doubt here, but taking the courage to ask you!!!
In the diagram, it’s pointing to only one eye, so if we write both compound ‘eye’ or ‘eyes’ will it be considered a correct answer?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Hi Liz,

Thanks a lot for the quick reply!

Yes it was from Cambridge 5, and I made a mistake in one word.
All the while I was reading it as ‘fireflies’ instaead of ‘glow-worm’. In fact, the horrible mistake I made was, I was assuming fireflies and glow-worm were same. You are an eye-opener.

The correct TFNG question:”Scientists have only recently been able to list the exact number of glow-worm species.”
Passage statement: “The fireflies are a huge group containing over 2000 species, with new ones being discovered all the time.”

So, since the passage doesn’t talk about the exact number of glow-worm species, rather it talks about the number of fireflies species, the answer would be “NOT GIVEN”. Am I correct?

Also for clarification, If the question was about fireflies, like I sent before, then will the answer be FALSE, because it says “over 2000” but not the exact number? Or will the answer be “NOT GIVEN” because it doesn’t talk about if anyone found the exact number?

Sorry, I am getting confused with this FALSE or NOT GIVEN.

    • Stop over thinking. You see that you made a mistake with one word and that altered everything. Now you know to be more careful – that is the lesson to learn from this mistake. Do not think about rewording the question to challenge further understanding – it would not happen in that way. So, now move on to something else. Here is a brief overview of TFNG:
TRUE = the information in the statement is correct – the passage shows that the information is accurate.
FALSE = the information in the statement is faulty, it is wrong. This is because the passage shows an opposite meaning or it shows that part of the statement is actually incorrect.
NG = we do not know if the information in the statement is right or wrong. The passage doesn’t give enough information for us to clearly state “it is right” or “it is wrong”.
      Does that help??

      • Yes, it makes it crystal clear.

I need to keep telling myself NOT GIVEN means passage doesn’t give enough information for me to state it is T or F. and FALSE means it has to CONTRADICT with the information in the passage. I can’t thank you enough Liz. I wish you get the best of the everything what you do.

  3. Hi Liz, Thanks a lot for the key techniques in answering IELTS questions and the explanations you provide. It is a greatest treasure I have ever found.

Could you please help with below TFNG question. The paragraph says “The fireflies are a huge group containing over 2000 species, with new ones being discovered all the time.”
And the TFNG question is: “Scientists have only recently been able to list the exact number of firefly’s species.”

Should the answer be FALSE or NOT GIVEN?

  4. Hi Liz,

Thanks for your amazing blog. Content is very useful for me.

I have one doubt about ANTS ELBOWED ANTENNA. In question six it says it cannot bend. In the passage there is no any part related to ANTENNA capabilities. So I have selected NG for this. (There is no evident to say there is a joint in the middle in the passage) Please clarify your answer for me.

  5. There ain’t any answer. I clicked (click here for ans ) mutiple times nothing happend

  6. Instead of the answer Mandibles, to give the answer Powerful Species is true or not?

    • No. The words “powerful species” do not relate to a part of the body. The diagram shows parts of an ant’s body.

    • In the IELTS test, you have only 20 mins to answer all the questions for one reading passage which contains more questions that this and a much longer passage. However, it is fine for training. Not all practice reading exercises need to be done with speed. Sometimes you can focus on developing scanning techniques or paraphrasing techniques. Decide which skill you will practice.

  89. Does this type of passages come in General Test, In the official Cambridge book, there are only 2 practice tests for the General exam? I wonder if I could practice these instead?

    • The GT reading passages have a different content and different layout (at least passage 1 and 2 are different). The question types are the same as the academic test. You can certainly use my materials to practise with. You should get the IELTS Cambridge test books for GT. There are 12 and each book has two GT tests.

  111. Answers:
    1. Abdomen
    2. Thorax
    3. Abdominal stinger
    4. Compound eyes
    5. Mandibles
    6. False
    7. Not given
    8. False

    Reason for T, F, NG:
    6. The question reads the antennae cannot be bent, whereas, the passage represents ‘elbowed antennae’ which is contradictory.
    7. The correct answer is “Not given” because the question asks ‘only the queen…’, but we have no information about other types of ants in the passage.
    8. From the passage, we can infer that metamorphosis gets completed once an adult ant emerges following the pupal stage but not after the larva; hence the answer may be wrong. (I am still unsure about the answer).
