Learn how to write a complex sentence for an IELTS line graph. It is common to be given a line graph to describe the main trends of the lines. This video tutorial shows you step by step how to write a complex sentence structure of over 25 words.
If you are aiming for band score 6 or above, you need to use complex sentences for your line graph description. This lesson will help you learn what information to put in your complex sentence. The complex sentence in this lesson is typical of a sentence used in a body paragraph.
Sentence Content
- subject
- verb
- adverb
- difference of amounts
- numbers
- dates
All sentences in the body paragraphs should be complex and must be supported by data. This means the sentences must have numbers and dates if you wish to get a high score.

Hi Liz,
Your video link for writing complex sentences for line graph is missing. Can you please suggest an alternate source/link because I am totally relying on your web content for my upcoming IELTS test as it is very precise, comprehensive and easy to understand and practice.
Thank You,
Best Regards.
You can see the page about writing four main complex sentences for a line graph: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-1-line-graph-sentences/. Also make sure you practise with real IELTS tests – these are from the IELTS Camrbridge Test books from 1 to 11 (11 is the most recent). Do a couple of tests and then do one test under exam conditions – that means giving yourself time limits with no break.
can i know the layout for map, flow chart, table and process.

Hello Liz,
This videos says it can’t be played because it’s private. Am I temporarily having an error? or is it actually not supposed to be played? Please check and thank you 🙂
Sorry, this has been removed for the present.
Hi Liz,
your video is still unavailable, will you fix it?
Thanks
I won’t be making any videos until the end of this year due to both ill health and no film studio. But as soon as I’m ready, I’ll remake this and post it.
Try Hard
Hello Liz,
I wanted to ask you about the video above, which was supposed to be about the use of complex vocabulary. Unfortunately I was unable to watch it since it says that this video is for private use. But from the posts above I can see that students were actually able to watch it online. So, could you tell me if you had changed the option for private use of there is sth wrong with my browser. If yes it is private, can you tell me if there is anyway I could still watch it?

Hi Liza
Thank you for your great efforts, we highly appreciate that.
do you have a complete course for IELTS?
so we can purchase it or attend it in UK.
Kind regards
Hi Liz,
Greetings from Bangladesh ! I must say this is a very informative blog for all levels of people practicing IELTS at home. But in this video, you have placed 2000 erroneously, in between 2009 and 2010 in x-axis. Otherwise everything is okay.
All the best.
Thanks. I plan to remove this lesson and redo it next month.
All the best
Liz
Hi Liz.
Can I put this information in the introduction?
This information is for the body paragraphs which contain the detail. Please see my model task 1 on the writing task 1 page.
Liz
Hi Liz,
Not to be rude, in your clip, I saw you used “the amount of people” to rephrased “the number of people” in the description. Is there any explanation for it?
Many thanks!
Thanh
Hi Thanh, I’ve been meaning to remove this video and replace it. While some people use “amount ” relating to people (it is increasingly common these days), there are examiners who won’t accept it so I must remove it. Sorry, for the confusion.
Liz
your lesson is very interesting . do you have lesson for both of bar chart pie chart . thanks
Yes, you will find it on my writing task 1 page.
Liz
Hi Liz,
Can I write ” The amount of people decided to start a vegetarian diet ” rather than ” The amount of people deciding to start a vegetarian diet “??
Thank you so much.
No, you can’t write “the number of people decided to start” but you can write “the number of people who decided to start..”.
All the best
Liz
Thanks a lot 🙂
Hello Liz,
Its a wonderful site to learn and prepare for IELTS.It would be grateful if you could help me in clarifying some doubts which I have in your lessons.I do have a dilemma whether to use “amount” to indicate people and the other one is ” units are measured”[though it happened in the past years 2000].Please explain how could it be possible.
It is best not to use “amount” with people. “Units are measured in ” is always written in the present passive because it refers to the current graph seen on the page.
All the best
Liz
